Along with each of you, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands found ourselves in uncharted territory as we faced the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 13, 2020, we made the difficult but appropriate decision to temporarily close in-person programming. With the support of our generous community, the Clubs continued to provide essential services and programming for our members and their families.

The first area of focus was providing evening meals to combat food insecurities with our members. We started a to-go sacked meal Monday through Friday at nine of our Club locations. With the help of our amazing donors, the Clubs provided meals from the end of March through the end of July, serving 74,855 meals.

Club staff also recognized that members didn’t have appropriate technology at home. In fact, some members had been trying to complete their schoolwork on cell phones. With schools turning to e-learning, having technology at home was critical for successful learning. The Clubs decided to hand out laptops to members who needed them, providing 278 laptops in total. In May, the Clubs created their own virtual Club experience called VOICE that provides a virtual take on the same core programming that Clubs have always been known for. Since its creation, VOICE has logged over 570 hours in programming!

With the utmost safety of our members, staff and our community, the Clubs safely reopened our doors in July of 2020. Our doors have continued to remain open. As of February 2021, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands is providing in-person programming at all 14 of our Club locations. None of this will be possible without the help of our community!
